CheckMates Proofreading is owned and run by Jane Hytner.

With over 20 years' experience in graphic and website design quality control, I have proofread and copy-edited just about every type of written communication!

As managing partner in a small graphic and website design consultancy, I gained a wide experience of the design industry. Having worked closely with designers and project managers for many years, I understand the demands and pressures of both, and the need for an accurate and reliable service.

In recent years, I have also provided regular freelance support to a leading design and print group, proofreading high pressure projects for a wide range of household names.

All of this, coupled with an unerring eye for detail and an enthusiasm for spotting any kind of error (sad, but true), makes me the perfect proofreading partner for your business.

In my opinion, proofreading requires a delicate balance between speed and accuracy and while I'm used to working to deadlines, I'll never compromise on quality.

Working Method

My working method is flexible; you can email me a PDF or word document, or if you prefer, I'm happy to mark up hard copy.

Although CheckMates is essentially an online service, I place a high value on establishing good working relationships and I'm always available to talk on the phone or to meet in person in order to discuss larger projects.

PDFs

I annotate content using a PDF editor. This allows changes and comments to be made on the document. Once completed, I'll email the amended PDF back to you.

Word Documents

Word's ‘Track Changes’ feature enables revisions to be highlighted; I'll supply you with two versions, one showing the suggested changes and one fully amended version. I will also provide accompanying notes, if appropriate.

Hard Copy

I mark up hard copy using the British Standard BS 5261 proofreaders' marks, or a simplified version of these, should you prefer. I can then scan the document and email it to you as a PDF or send it in the post.

You retain full control over your content

Whichever method you choose, the decision to implement the revisions always rests with you.
