Differences between proofreading and copy-editing
Although CheckMates can combine copy-editing and proofreading into one process, essentially, they are separate operations.
Proofreading
Proofreading is the task of reviewing a document to identify and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar and typography.
We purge, purify and perfect
CheckMates corrects:
- spelling, grammar and punctuation mistakes
- omitted words which distort the meaning of
a sentence
- inconsistencies in style and typography
- formatting irregularities, such as misalignment, widows, rivers and orphans
- incorrect captions on pictures, charts and graphs
- index and pagination errors
Copy-editing
Copy-editing is a more extensive procedure; it includes all the elements of proofreading but also addresses matters of content, style, syntax and clarity. The copy-editing process should improve the quality of the writing and make it more readable.
Consistent, clear and compelling copy
CheckMates will:
- vet the document as
for proofreading
- refine the text to ensure clear, concise sentences and correct usage of words
- restructure the text, if necessary, to ensure a logical flow of ideas
- ensure that the writer is saying precisely
what he or she means to say, with no confusion
or ambiguity
- maintain a consistent tone and style throughout
- identify sequential mistakes and lapses in logic
